Advantages

• Less greenhouse emission: Nuclear energy does not give out gases like carbon dioxide and methane which are hugely responsible for greenhouse effect.

• Efficient source of energy: Advancement in technology has helped nuclear energy become one of the most powerful and efficient sources of energy.

• Reliable: Nuclear energy can be produced 24/7 without anu specific time or weather constraints.

• Cheap electricity: Cost of uranium, one of the major requirements for generation of electricity, is quite low. Also, running cost of a nuclear plant is comparatively low.

• Continuous supply: The best part of nuclear energy is that it has a continuous supply. It is expected to last longer than coal, oil and natural gas!

• Easy transport: As uranium is required in minimal quantity, transport is easier than fossil fuels like coal.

Disadvantages

• Radioactive Waste: The nuclear wastes contain radio isotopes with long half-lives. They stay in the atmosphere in some form of the other. These reactive radicals make the sand or water contaminated.

• Nuclear Accidents: Leakages can cause devastating results.

• High initial investment: A huge amount of investment is needed to set up a nuclear power station.

• Fuel Availability Unlike coal, uranium is a lesser available resource and is not found in many countries.

• Non-Renewable: Nuclear energy will keep giving a continuous supply as long as uranium is there. Once all extracted, nuclear plants will not be of any use.
